my tears are yours

They say not to base your characters off of yourself, and I try not to, but I've always based my character's emotions off of my own.

I write when I am feeling the most emotional, whether I'm super happy, sad, angry, etc. My character's emotions come from my own, in a way a huge piece of my heart and soul gets captured in my words. My characters understand me more than I understand myself, and that is truly one of the biggest miracles of writing.

Half of Alex's story has been written through tears, and I hope that in the end it shows and feels real, because it is.

I'm sorry for this ramble, I'm just going through a lot right now, but here's an (unedited, so forgive any errors) snippet from my current WIP to make up for it:

  1. Characters do reflect us don't they?!? You described things so well in the snippet! I'm sorry you are going through a lot right now... I will pray for you. Have a good day! Can you believe it is already July 1st?!? Wow! How time flies!

  8. Love this!! <3 And yes, i totally agree with you about emotion and writing. I also have a tendency to write when i’m feeling really angry or depressed or happy inside. Writing helps me explain myself. Thank for sharing your thoughts; i almost always find them inspirational. :)

  9. This snippet is beautiful. I agree-- a lot of writing does stem from ourselves and our inner turmoils. The best part is the way the truth unfolds and how its also just an incredible way to word experiences or emotions which can be so hard to portray but done so in a way that people can understand and relate.

  10. Omg I really relate to putting a part of yourself into your writing... I struggle to communicate my feelings to the people around me quite a lot, and one of the ways that I've always been able to express myself is through writing stories that convey my feelings. I've also discovered a lot about who I am through my characters... Anyway I really loved that snippet! It's so raw and emotional.

  11. I do that too! I think it makes the writing stronger and vivid. The emotions bleed off the page, like in this snippet. I love your writing style, it's beautiful! There's something vulnerable and raw about it.
Sorry your going through stuff, I'll be praying for you!

  12. Hi Gray. I know you've already got a whole bunch of people who commented and told you how good this is, but I wanted to say it anyway.
    This is so good.

You've got a gift girl. And you're doing an amazing job using it.

And I'm always praying for you. All the time. Keep fighting, keep working through things. Keep reaching up and reaching out.
    Love you.

  13. *sobs* Characters like Alex are so real... and they are so important, because they help people understand the pain that others go through. We need to see them fall...and then we need to see them rise.

  16. That was so beautiful, Gray <3 It's so true, as the saying goes, that writing is just sitting a typewriter and bleeding. But emptying all that out can heal others.

    Praying for you <3

  17. You're writing is beautiful..as well as heartbreaking. *hides and cries* I'm sorry you've been feeling so rough. You're in my prayers. <3
When our pain seeps into our character's lives, it can make the book like a lifeboat for someone who's going through that same pain (like Beck from A Thousand Perfect Notes). The pain can feel so real that it clutches a part of you that you might not have known was there.

  18. Hey Gray! That snippet - AHHH! It's really good!!!!!! I feel the emotion and I know how characters usually mimic pieces of our own lives (I have a few characters that sum me up in a nut shell). It sounds like you're going through a lot and I'm praying for you, girl! XOXO
