A Book That RIPPED My Heart Into Shreds // seriously, it didn't hit this hard the first time I read it // no i'm not okay

Have you ever wanted to have your heart ripped in two?

Have you ever wanted to stay up until two a..m. with tears in your eyes?

Well, I have the perfect book for you!

Summary (from goodreads):

Conor has the same dream every night, ever since his mother first fell ill, ever since she started the treatments that don't quite seem to be working. But tonight is different. Tonight, when he wakes, there's a visitor at his window. It's ancient, elemental, a force of nature. And it wants the most dangerous thing of all from Conor. It wants the truth.

I'm going to be honest, this book is heartbreaking. It's not a happy book.

It's a book about loss, grief, denial, and letting go.

But it also has so much love and light in it, which makes it so powerful.

This book shows a boy dealing with the truth, and it's the hardest but most freeing thing to read, it's impossible to explain.

"Your mind will believe comforting lies while also knowing the painful truths that make those lies necessary. And your mind will punish you for believing both.”

Let's also talk about the amazing art in this book.

Truly beautiful and heartwrenching.

This book deals with so many important issues, Ness's writing is a masterpiece in this tale of growing up, loss, truth, and real friends.

A Monster Calls, as I wrote before, is not a happy book.

But it's an important one.

:::C O N T E N T:::

-A few mild swear words, taking the Lord's name in vain, and some English swear words

-Emotional content, bullying, blood, anger, and *highlight to see spoiler* death of a loved one *spoiler*

-Mentions of more mature things, murders, one (and very brief + nondetailed)  mention of two people sleeping together in a story that is told

Obviously, this story is a little more mature and a bit darker, so I'd personally recommend to 14+

:::R A T I N G:::

Five stars

This book is so touching and real.

  1. THIS BOOK. I think this is one of my favorite books of all time, ever, up there with things like Lord of the Rings. I have read it at least six times now and I always cry, every single time. This review is beautiful <3

  3. I haven't read the book, but I saw the trailer for the movie, and I wasn't sure about the monster, the monster seemed less to be helping the boy and instead doing something else, that was destructive.

    But other than that I think your review is awesome.

    1. I have a lot of theories about the monster, but the monster mainly signifies truth, so it isn't really there to comfort or heal.

      Thank you!

  4. I haven't read it, but I did watch the movie on VidAngel. That was sad, but also a little heartwarming, just because I could understand his struggles and what he was going through...I guess the book will probably make me cry cuz I /am/ a movie crier...

  7. Oh my gosh I have read this book! My sister read it and warned me that I would cry, but I read it anyway and I made it all the way through the book without any problems and I'm like 'wow what made her cry?' and then I got to the very last sentence, closed the book, and went to the bathroom to cry really hard for ten minutes. Yeah, it ripped my heart out.
