Small Damages

"It's a girl," I say.
"Si. Congratulations."
"She would have been my daughter," I say, and I start to cry, and suddenly I can't stop crying.
 -Small Damages

With all of the pro-life posts floating around, I thought I should recommend a book with a positive message along those lines.

This book is a must-read for this spring!

Summary:

~It’s senior year, and while Kenzie should be looking forward to prom and starting college in the fall, she is mourning the loss of her father. She finds solace in the one person she trusts, her boyfriend, and she soon finds herself pregnant. Kenzie’s boyfriend and mother do not understand her determination to keep the baby. She is sent to southern Spain for the summer, where she will live out her pregnancy as a cook’s assistant on a bull ranch, and her baby will be adopted by a Spanish couple.
Alone and resentful in a foreign country, Kenzie is at first sullen and difficult. She begins to open her eyes and her heart to the beauty that is all around her and inside of her.~

This book is such a quiet, sweet book. Written in beautiful prose, it might not be everyone's forte, but I adored it.

Eighteen-year-old, Kenzie is sent to Spain after refusing to get an abortion to give birth to her child to save face for her widowed mother.

"Five months is forever," I told her.
"You made your choices," she said, and I said, "No." Because the only thing I chose was you.-Small Damages

Small Damages is a tale that speaks about with teenage pregnancy, as well as being a coming of age tale about finding your true self and seeking forgiveness for the mistakes of one's past.

"You aren’t happy," Estela says.
"I can’t be happy." I say.
"Look at me, Kenzie."
"I’m looking at you, Estela."
"Do you know your own heart?"
"I don’t know anything."
"Go," she says, " and think. And don’t come back until you know." -Small Damages

Plus, the descriptions of Seville, Spain will take your breath away.

All in all, this is such a gorgeous heartbreaking story of love and searching for hope.

RATING:

four out of five oranges

The only thing is that this story feels a little underdeveloped, it's a very short book so I feel like there are so many things that should have been delved into deeper.

Overall, this was a lovely read and I would recommend it!

Have you read this book?

What are your thoughts?
